Frequently Asked Questions

How do I contact the owner or webmaster of this website?

There are many links throughout the Online Outdoors Website has an adjacent Email link.  Double clicking on this link will execute your computer's default Internet Mail program.  If you do not have a default Internet Mail handler installed on your computer you should install at least Internet Explorer 3.0 or Netscape 3.0 and configure their Internet Mail programs to be your default Internet Mail programs. Or, you can address your messages to the webmaster@online-outdoors.com

Why does my Internet Browser put scroll bars on WebPages?

All pages in the Eastman Gunshows Website are optimized to use either Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 or Netscape's Navigator 3.0+, although many of the features of this website will not be available to users using Netscape's Navigator.   This website is also optimized for a screen resolution of 800x600 and while it will normally display pages correctly at standard VGA screen resolutions of 640x480 you will obtain better viewing of these pages by changing your screen resolution to the larger   SVGA resolution of 800x600.

Why does it sometimes take a long time to load pages in the Eastman Gunshows Website?

The time it takes for your computer to load WebPages is a function of several things:   The speed of your computer, the speed of your modem, the speed of your current Internet connection (DCE), the actual throughput of your ISP's (Internet Service Provider) server and its connection to the Internet, the activity of the server where the web is physically located and the number of persons accessing the website, itself.  All of these vary from second to second, minute to minute and hour to hour.  Load times will also increase each time a webpage on the Web is updated because your Internet browser must download each updated file and cache it on your local computer.
Certain browsers take longer to load FrontPage 98 WebPages than do others.  This website is optimized for Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.0 and Internet Explorer 4.0 (MSIE).   FrontPage 98 webs, because of their cutting edge technology, take advantage of new features not supported by all versions of Netscape's browsers.  Netscape will probably support the technology used in FrontPage 98 websites in future versions of their browsers but their current browsers take much longer to load these websites than do MSIE 3.0 and MSIE 4.01.

How can I speed up my access to the Eastman Gunshows Website?

The best method is to update your computer's hardware to a faster processor including the installation of a faster modem.    The next best method is to use an ISP which takes advantage of your modem's current speed by connecting to one of their nodes which is able to use the top rated speed of your existing modem.  The next best method is to connect only during the hours of 8AM to 4PM and midnight to 6AM.  If you try to access the website during its peak hours (5PM to 11PM) then you must expect to wait because millions of other Internet users will be on line during these periods.  If you expect your three year old 14.4K modem to still deliver the blazing speeds it did a few years ago - forget it.  The minimum modem speed you should even consider is one with a top rated speed of 33.6K with 57.6K the ideal because phone lines will seldom allow you to obtain the top rated speed of your modem.  Other things you can do to speed up Internet access is to install an Internet browser, like Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.0 or higher or Netscape's Navigator 3.0 or higher,  which utilize a cache system to store recently accessed files on your local computer.

What are the buttons on the left hand side of the page used for?

The buttons on the left hand side of each webpage are "Navigation Buttons" and are generally referred to as "soft links" because the content of this area of the page changes from page-to-page as you navigate through the website.  These Navigation Buttons only contain links to pages that can be accessed from that particular page.  Double clicking on any of these buttons will take you to the page identified on the button.  Many pages may also have a "Home" or an "Up" button.  Clicking on the "Home" button will take you back to the Welcome Page.  Clicking on the "Up" button will take you back to the previous page.  The "Up" button works similarly to the "Back" button on your Internet browser.  Many pages also have "hard links" which are coded hyperlinks that never change.  This method gives you two methods to reach any document in the web because you can either double click on the "Navigation Buttons" or the links coded on each page.   Either will take you to the same location.

Does the Online Outdoors Website support early browsers?

No!  The Eastman Gunshows Website does not support early Internet browsers like Microsoft's Internet Explorer 2.0 and Netscape's Navigator 2.0 both of which are non-JAVA and non-frames enabled Internet browsers.  If you have one of these Internet browsers please update to either Microsoft Internet Explore version 3.0, Netscape Navigator version 3.0 or one of their later browsers.
This website is developed with Microsoft's FrontPage 98 and works best with Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 (MSIE).   If you do not use MSIE as your default browser, we suggest that you update to this browser as soon as possible because FrontPage 98 utilizes undocumented features in MSIE 4.0 to speed up your access to FrontPage 98 websites.

Why do I sometimes get slow Internet connections?

The maximum speed you can achieve over the Internet is determined by the slowest link between you and whatever actual site you are transferring from.   Slow data transfers can be caused by any number of things but two of the most common reasons are your ISP or a busy site.   If you are using a small ISP that only has a 128K ISDN link to their Internet provider and he has 20-30 users connected at the same time, the actual throughput of this 128K link is being divided by 20-30.    A most likely scenario for slow data transfers is a busy site. Microsoft's website is a perfect example. This site has megabytes of bandwidth which normally makes their site is relatively fast.    However, when Microsoft releases a new product, such as Internet Explorer 4.0, tens of thousands of users try to download it all at once which slows the site to a crawl.   When this occurs it may take hours to download data from this site even when using a fast T-1 connection.   Similar problems occur at other websites when they release a new product.

I tried to send Eastman Gunshows a Email message and it will not work?

Unless you have an Internet Mail handler installed on your computer you will not be able to utilize some of the Email links available on this web.   Before you can use these links you will have to install MSIE 3.0+ or Netscape Navigator 3.0+ and configure their Internet Mail programs to work with your Email address.   As an alternative use the link(s) on the contact page "Send an Email to

Differences between Netscape and Internet Explorer

The facts are -- Microsoft's Internet Explorer loads this website much faster and more accurately than any version of Netscape's browser.   The reason is - Netscape's browsers are not fully compliant with the latest versions of HTML standards.   Microsoft's Internet Explorers version 3.0 & 4.0 are fully compliant with these standards.
Tests run on this website with a 28.8K modem indicate you should be able to load the welcome page for this website in less than 35 seconds.   If it takes longer for you to load and cache this page this means you not connected to the Internet via of a 28.8K connection.  Faster modems and connections will take proportionally less time.  A 57.6K connection should load this page in less than 10 seconds although true 57.6K connections are extremely rare.

There are other differences between even the latest versions of Netscape and Internet Explorer.   Netscape 4.5 does not support the use of "marquees," "embedded styles" or "background sound" directives, all of which are fully supported in HTML standards.   Netscape also does not always display the text in "drop-down text boxes," correctly as well as the location of standard text boxes if used within a "HTML defined table."
    This is why visitors to

What factors affect website performance?

Web site performance can be affected by a number of different factors. These include:

Most browsers do not make a single connection to websites.   Many browsers are capable of maintaining up to four simultaneous connections.
If you have a slow network connection, files take longer to reach your computer over a modem.   This is because each graphic in an HTML page is a separate file and requires its own connection to be transferred to the your browser.   If files are large, or HTML pages contain a large number of graphics, the visitor must wait for any page to load.
